The eight-minute song is Radiohead’s Tom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood and Kemet’s Sons jazz drummer Tom Skinner’s first new music of 2023.
Almost a year After The Smile surprised fans with a new song at the Montreux Jazz Festival, with Thom Yorke admitting he only wrote the words 30 minutes before he took the stage, the band finally released their new single, “Bending Hectic.”
The eight-minute track marks the band’s first release of 2023 after being recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios earlier this year.
The band formed in 2020 as part of the COVID-19 Lockdown Aspect Project and debuted their 2022 album. Light to attract attention It was met with critical acclaim. But while they were touring the album, the band began teasing new music, with Yorke introducing the song during their encore performance at the Switzerland Festival the previous July, stating that it was a relief for him to see the lyrics from a stage in front of him.
“I can see the words—that’s fine. Because I just wrote it about half an hour ago,” he said. “So, we follow the train accident.”
Sam Bates-Davies, a longtime Radiohead collaborator, selected the London Contemporary Orchestra on strings as producer.
