Portal has launched the productivity-enhancing Mac app. The company helps users regain focus and become more productive with immersive backgrounds and natural sounds.
The service has been available through an iOS app since 2019 – the desktop and mobile apps have the same goals. The company said the app has attracted more than 1 million downloads. With a native Mac app compatible with Apple silicon, the developers aim to meet the needs of professionals working from home and the office.
Portal for Mac has over 80 environments to choose from, which include high-quality loop videos captured by the company’s team. The startup said it used 12,000 cameras to record some of the world’s most scenic and serene landscapes.

You can choose to loop videos on your desktop or turn off animation. In this case, you get a more traditional static background image. In addition, you can turn off desktop icons so that you can only look at the landscape.
The environment also comes with natural background sounds compatible with spatial audio. Additionally, Portal supports integrations with smart lights like Philips Hue and Nanoleaf to match the lights to the environment you’re setting up.
Users can control the sound and movement or change the background through the menu bar icon as well. Since Portal is a native Mac app, it integrates with Siri Shortcuts as well.

Portal is available to everyone through the Mac App Store with a seven-day trial. After that, users need to pay $9.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Alternatively, they can also purchase a lifetime license for a one-time fee of $249.99.
