Congratulations to Fifty Fifty, whose single “Cupid” made history by becoming the first ever song by a K-pop girl group to reach the top 10 on the UK Songs Chart.
The group’s viral song “Cupid” broke into the top 10 of the national ranking of the most consumed tunes in the UK in the current rating, reaching a new peak of No. 9 on the chart. Slash has recently enjoyed a newfound popularity on TikTok, and it is quickly gaining traction.
“Cupid” was on the UK Singles Chart for only six weeks, which isn’t a very long time for any track to jump into the top ten – let alone a relatively unknown track.
While other K-pop girl groups have achieved success on the UK Singles Chart in the past, and some have achieved a number of wins, none have had success with Fifty Fifty.
Blackpink are the most successful all-female group from South Korea, at least when looking at the sheer number of hits they have reached in the UK, they’ve proven to be a powerhouse in the UK Singles Chart, having charted eight Top 40 hits. hits, including “Pink Venom,” “Lovesick Girls,” “Kill This Love,” and others. Their most popular song to date is “How You Like That” which climbed to #20 on the list.
In 2022, Blackpink scores a historic milestone by taking first place on the UK Albums Chart with their second studio album, I was born among youmaking them the first K-pop girl group to do so.
Looking at all the South Korean music acts, only a few have had top 10 hits recorded in the UK and this list includes Psy (“Gangnam Style”, “Gentleman”), Pinking (“Baby Shark”) and BTS (“Dynamite”) and “Life Goes On,” “Butter,” “My Universe” with Coldplay), and now FiftyFifty.
So far, Fifty Fifty has released a handful of singles, only officially launching in 2022. They dropped an EP last fall, but they haven’t made themselves known in Western markets yet, so they haven’t performed well. Now, with the success of “Cupid,” they may be seeing the old cuts’ popularity increase, and they’ve set themselves up for future success with whatever they’re working on next.
