If you are an entrepreneur, it makes sense to consider the possibility of getting something more permanent for your time. – Roland Fraser 3:40
What I’ve found most effective is saying that you have the knowledge, skills, experience, and connections that add tremendous value to companies, so you have a choice: You can have short-term income and flat fees, get hourly money, and even a mid-earnings share. But then, when that stops, it stops. A way around that is to go in and add value to the business. The value you bring to the company must be compensated by participating in the profits or continuing equity of the company. If I increase the value of an asset, wouldn’t it be appropriate and fair to share in a portion of what that asset will be valued at? What will ultimately be sold when you sell the company? Here’s the concept: How do you turn your effort into fairness? – Roland Fraser, 05:12
After many years in marketing, I don’t consider myself a mere SEO. I am usually brought in to do SEO consulting and help with this aspect. Next thing I know, there’s a new brand launch, so I’m looking for opportunities for brand messaging, a look at the product before it’s released, and getting involved in this and that. – Lauren Baker 13:03

I will stay away from businesses that are already unprofitable. So now I’m going to look at where I could have the most impact, and so I’ll say if the lift I can add to this company is something that I think will move the needle for them, I think it’s an appropriate conversation. – Roland Fraser, 9:40
They’ll put you in this box if you’re an SEO, so how you brand and present is essential. I will position myself as a strategist rather than just an SEO. The fact that SEO is one of the things you do is important. It might be the main thing you do. But even alliances with other people who can provide additional services is a smart way to go because if you go into growth, you know the company will value you more than if you enter as a component or sub-component of development. – Roland Fraser 15:01
People may think that it is not possible for you to be your partner. It might not happen to them, but they might think you’re so far beyond that that it’s not even an option. So by letting them know upfront that this is an option and having them put a special spin on the game by having them show that they believe in you and are willing to invest in themselves is crucial to making this work. – Roland Fraser, 20:00
