SPF anti aging lip products
Many lip balms serve one primary purpose – to hydrate and comfort your lips. But there are plenty of formulations out there that protect your lips from UV rays, provide an immediate plumping effect, help your lips become fuller over time, and more. These anti-aging lip products deserve a place in your skincare routine, explains Diedre Hooper, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New Orleans, LA.
“Over time, you lose volume, so your lips become less long and wide, and the fat that hides your muscles disappears,” says Dr. Huber. “The muscles become more visible, and you can see every contraction. The lips are completely enclosed and connected to all kinds of muscles that you twist into the shapes of the face, creating lines.” There’s not much you can do about this volume loss, but you are Can Do things to keep the skin around your lips nice and thick to make the muscles less visible. “Anything you can do to keep your skin thick will make you look more youthful,” adds Dr. Hooper.
The number one cause of premature signs of aging is the sun, which is why using lip products with SPF is so important. “The reason your skin is thinning on the outside of your lips is 99 percent caused by the sun,” she says. “You can buy a million anti-aging products, but if you’re walking around outside without an SPF, you’re really kind of foolish.”
Once you’ve got an SPF lip balm in your routine, you can layer it on other anti-aging lip products with ingredients like antioxidants to boost the effectiveness of the SPF and peptides to boost collagen production and plump up over time. “You can do things like retinol, retinoids, growth factors, peptides—you really don’t conceptually treat the skin of the lips or around the lips any differently than you should treat the skin on your eyelids or your forehead or your hands or whatever,” says Dr. Huber.
You also want all of these lip products to contain great hydrating and hydrating ingredients, as dry skin can exaggerate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. “The skin has four thick layers, and the cells themselves can absorb water,” says Dr. Huber. So when skin cells aren’t hydrated, “they look like a deflated leaf. Water is a great plumping resource—that’s why hyaluronic acid is such a great hydrator,” because it attracts water to the skin.
